The People's Theater

How a single shoot day became a multi-year creative partnership.

Film / Photography / Archive / Partnership / RTM & Co.

One day of documentation.

The original request was simple. Capture a production before the organization moved into its new home, so the work that defined the previous chapter would not disappear when the lights went out on the old venue.

A straightforward archival brief. One shoot day, one camera, a record of the work for the institution's history.

What happened next was the conversation that turned an archival day into a creative partnership.

One project became a creative partnership.

The first shoot went well enough that the institution asked us back for a second. Then a third. Within six months we were producing the rebrand video. Within twelve we had captured a series of season vignettes across the productions that defined the year. Within eighteen, a bus-stop campaign on the streets of New York was supporting the institution's subscription renewal drive.

We stopped being a vendor on the procurement list and became part of the team that planned the season.

In time, RTM was the studio of record for the rebrand, the season campaigns, the donor stories, and the photography library. Most recently, the institution was documenting the move into the new venue, building the archive for the new building, and producing the films that anchored one of the strongest fund cycles in the institution's history.

A media system for a growing institution.

Over multiple seasons on the roster, the institution has gained:

  • A full rebrand video
  • Season vignettes across multiple production years
  • A bus-stop and out-of-home photography campaign
  • Performance documentation across the full repertoire
  • Artist interviews and behind-the-scenes capture
  • The full archival package for the move into the new venue
  • The development team's web and social media library
  • The Annual Gala documentation (in post-production)

A single evening opens next year's campaign.

The most recent chapter is this year's Annual Gala, the institution's biggest development night of the year. Across one evening we captured the room, the artists, the audience, the donor moments, the speeches, the after-party.

The footage and stills now serve multiple uses. A short film opens next year's campaign. A donor recap is already in front of the board. A piece of the venue's permanent archive. Sound bites for the institution's podcast. Social content that ran the week after the event and again at the close of the annual fund cycle.

One evening, sourced once, used across a year. This is the framework running as a system: Document, Extend, Amplify, all from a single night.

The institution stopped starting from scratch.

The footage from the original shoot day is still in active use. The campaign assets from year one anchored a second-year subscription drive. The rebrand video introduced the new chapter to audiences who had not seen the institution in years. Nothing has gone into a folder and disappeared.

The library keeps producing. The story across seasons becomes legible. The audience sees the institution year-round, not just on opening nights. The board sees the work. The funders see the work. And the institution, several seasons in, looks like the kind of organization that knows how to tell its own story.

That is what a creative partnership produces, given time.
